Default A Stir Of Echos or a Trick Of The Brain?

Okay, I'm DEFENTLY not sleeping tonight.

Now I've heard some mighty strange things in my life, and seen a good assortment of wierd happenings... But this defently takes the cake....

It's been a slow night, and I've been restless this whole month. I was reading at the kitchen table, relaxing in the breeze that came from my deck. TV and all that other crap was turned off and I was just enjoying the crickets and Kurt Vonnigutt. Now it takes alot to freak me out... I have no reason to be scared: I'm armed *Snort*, but what happend next almost made me concider getting a bigger boat (JAWs referance..). First, I hear this crackling, like something was messing around on the dead twigs and other rubbish on the ground outside in the small area of woods outside my apartment/condo (I live in the butt end of Boston where wilderness is an every day thing). That didn't surprise me: We have deer and coyottes here, so I figured it was one of them. That was, of course untill I hear this LOUD, ear splitting yelp of some kind.

It sounded like a dog, almost. It was most defently not a bark. It was deep, it had a virbrato and treble that a dog cannot produce. It was crackiling, like something with a big sore throat. At first, I thought it was some kid being a jack-hole, trying to wake everyone up at 2:30 in the morning, but something kept me from ignoring it. I put my book down and went towards the patio. The yelping came in bursts. YELP YELP YELP....... YELP YELP YELP........ then total silence. I darted my eyes through the screen but didn't see anything except the poor excuse of a lawn and the line of trees that marked it.

I keep watching, and again, I heard that YELP crap again, but a little closer. It went on for about 10 minutes, just yelping over and over in bursts. It seemed that whatever was making the noise was just standing in the same place. Again, silence, and I could hear something rummaging around (You realize that when you get scared or nervous, your senses highten). It was silent for a good 5 or 6 minutes, and then I heard the yelping again, only much further away.

I got this cold shiver on my back and finnaly got the phone to call the police. I had this argument with myself on wether I should call the police or animal control.. Well, police around here have .40 S&W... And animal control carries nets... So I called the police. It's 3:00 now and I'm in the office so I cant hear anything outside. I haven't heard any kind of response to what the hell that thing was, but my neighbor is freaking out.

Maybe one of you guys in here knows some kind of animal that makes that sound in that manner. If you do, please, I would realllly like to know what it
was. As for now, I'm keeping the locker unlocked.

Now that I think of it, this thread could have more life than just an explaination to put me at ease. If anybody has had an experiance that made them freak out like this, drop a line. Could be good reading.

Oh my. Two things to say about that. One is funny and the other is the thing that creeped me out. The funny one is that your "animal" could be Cosmo Cramer. When he was trying to ge the attention of Joe Dimassio, he was banging on the coffee table and yelping. It was hilarious. Ok, my creepy thing.

I was walking down to the old playground with two of my buddies at like 2am. We usually go down there and do a gauntlet of some sort on the playtoys. Its hard to explain but its the most intense workout anyone has ever done.

So after about 20 minutes of gauntlet action, we hear this metal scraping sound just 10-20 feet away from us on the road. Before I continue, we are 3 fairly strong guys that aren't really afraid of much. Between the three of us, we could probably wrestle bears. So yeah, we wondered what was making the metal scraping sound but just passed it off as the wind, and we continued to do the gauntlet.

Then in came a sound that can only be described as the moaning that the Redead make in Ocarina of Time. It was really just around the corner it seems, just outside of the light that the nearby streetlight gave off. Even with all three of us guys, we couldn't build up the nerves go out there and figure out what was making both of those sounds. Not even, "SHOW YOURSELVES!" like we generally would have done in a situation like that.

After we heard the Redead, we just slowly got off of the playtoys and ran the entire way back to my friend's house.

We were later told that our "Redead" were possibly toads or opossums.

As for your animal... It is most likely a coyote. You said yourself that they live in that area, so why rule them out? Possibly a coyote fighting a raccoon? Animals sound different when they fight. Maybe if you could better describe the yelping.

My longest post ever? I think so...

That was like such a perfect sentence...

Anyhoo, no idea whats making your sound.

We used to get raccoons that got on the roof. When you were upstairs the sound sounded like it was coming from downstairs, when you were downstairs it sounded like it was coming from upstairs.

SCARY stuff.

Sorry but the description of the sound isn't very descriptive not that you can really describe a sound well using words.

You know, you could be right. I mean, I do remember hunting with an old buddy of mine in Vermont, and hearing his scarey as hell moan out in the distance. He told me it was a "Death Wail", a sound made by a buck if he's hurt real bad. It's very loud, very annoying, and very creepy. We heard it all night untill Rick (that guy I was with) went out to find it. 20 minutes and a 30-06 later, the wailing stop. He came back and told me the poor thing was hurt real bad, soemthing about it's legs being managled by a bear or something. I guess he put it out of it's misery. That could've been the case here.. Maybe a Coyot got hit by a car and was preforming a "Death wail"? I'll check in tomorrow with the rest of the neighborhood.

Turns out, Dan was right. Guess what I found by the woods? A dead coyot with a terribly messed up leg (I'm guessing he either got hit or got caught in a trap or something). I guess he bled to death, the poor thing.

Your armed right? So just yell "Shut the HELL up!" Out the door, and get back to reading. Maybe throw some headphones on.

Doesn't chupacabra suck on goat blood though >_>... but i want to post my scary moment as well

When i first moved into this house i use to look at the back porch, until a few nights after i started to see red figures moving across and one night i stood there (being stupid me heh) staring at the figure, it suddenly took a sharp turn and it stared at me (either i was hullcinating or something or i might have seen a "ghost" of somesort), but i ran into my room and hid under my covers (LOL).

And another thing is, i always hear footsteps in my living room when the nights are silent and all you hear are the cars outside. Like a few nights ago, i took a shower came out went to my room and jumped on my bed and i heard and extremly loud THUMP, but i just thought it was probably an animal that got on my back porch and hit a plant or something so i just went and slept.

wow long post

Yeah, bucks make the strangest Death Wail or mating call. I remember the first time I went hunting, I was 13. I was up in the tree with my old friend, and all of the sudden I hear a "ReeeeeeEEEEAH!!! EAH! EAH EAH EAH!" followed by my own "WHAT THE @^!!?"

Well, maybe I'm just acting like a little schoolgirl (as they tend to be very scared of anything small and such?), but in the neighborhood here (I live in a residential area .. no wilds here!) there has been this strange, faint, crying noise .. heard just about every night around midnight to 3 am.

Now, I don't believe in ghosts and other crazy creepy creatures, especially not in residential areas, but that noise really freaked me out.

To make a long story short: It was a freaking rooster.
